Shih Tzus In Maine – “The Lion Dog”

The name Shih Tzu in Chinese means “Lion Dog”, but because the hair around the face grows in all directions, the breed is sometimes called “chrysanthemum-faced dog.” Believed to have originated in Tibet, the breed made its way to China in the 16 th century as gifts to the Manchu Dynasty. Since its noble beginnings, the Shih Tzu has been valued worldwide for its energetic, independent, and often amusing character. Its intelligence and loveable personality make the Shih Tzu a very popular pet as well as a great show dog. Officially recognized as a breed in the U.S. in 1969, the Shih Tzu ranges in size from 8 to 11 inches in height and may weigh between 9 to 16 pounds. The fur is long, dense, and straight … beard, whiskers, and fur about the nose and face grow outward forming a lion-like mane or flower blossom effect. Its tail curves over the back in a long, luxurious plume. The coat can be any color, but a blaze of white on the forehead is very desirable and valued.

Our Shih Tzu puppies are located in Maine. Prices start at $750.00.

I found this great quote by American composer James Mumsford which is his definition of the  Shih Tzu personality & I have to agree!  “… a dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man, a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, (and) a dash of teddy bear.”
